Bone Setting Associated Disability Study

The research initiative from which BOSAD developed, focused on disability and complications associated with traditional bone setting in Ethiopia.

Study overview

Research question

What range of traditional bone-setting practices and associated complications occurs among trauma patients in Ethiopia, and how might evidence support safer practice?

Population & setting

Trauma patients previously treated by traditional bone setters. · Ethiopia · 8 participating tertiary centers

Approach

National web-based data collection across eight tertiary centers; study variables were piloted at the Hawassa host center over six months.

Why this study matters

BOSAD’s founding project set out to document complications associated with traditional bone setting and to inform safer practice guidance with relevant stakeholders. These stated aims describe the project’s purpose, not evidence of impact.

Study context & scope

Study contextThe project site describes a national Ethiopian effort focused on traditional bone-setting practice and complications among people with musculoskeletal injuries.

Scope of the studyThe project description focuses on practice and complications among trauma patients previously treated by traditional bone setters, and on developing practice guidance with stakeholders.

Limits of interpretationThis project record describes aims and methods but does not establish national complication rates or the effects of later guidance or interventions. The linked pediatric publication reports a hospital-based cohort and should not be read as a national estimate.
